Modhi Vilayadu

Modhi Vilayadu (2009) narrates the story of Uday Vasudev and his tryst with (borrowed) identity.

The film raises the question: What if you have lived a lie all your life?

In the film, you get to meet Uday, Rajan Vasudev, Chanakya and Eswari and begin to feel sad for them. Why?

You feel sad for

  • Uday (for the lie he lived)
  •  Rajan Vasudev (for the life he lived)
  • Chanakya (for the false life he loved)
  • Madan (for the life he never lived)
  • Eswari(for the lie she believed)

People (mis)spell LIFE as: I (Rajan Vasudev) , IF (Madan) , LIE (Chanakya)

Life has to be spelt as LIFE! A fact that Uday painfully learns.

How do we face the truth about ourselves? Remember, truth comes in different shades: the truth, the real truth and nothing but the truth! How do we let go ‘borrowed’ identity? How do we let go ‘false’ identity? And most importantly, How do we get to be ourselves? How do we live our lives – in all its fullness?

Do we need to really fight it out? Or is there someone who will help us?

Lyrics

I can’t escape this hell / So many times i’ve tried / But i’m still caged inside / Somebody get me through this nightmare/ I can’t control myself

So what if you can see the dark inside of me / No one will ever change this animal I have become / Help me believe it’s not the real me / Somebody help me tame this animal

I can’t escape myself / So many times i’ve lied / But there’s still rage inside / Somebody get me through this nightmare / I can’t control myself

Some what if you can see the dark inside of me / No one will ever change this animal I have become / Help me believe it’s not the real me / Somebody help me tame this animal / Help me believe it’s not the real me

Somebody help me tame this animal /Somebody help me through this nightmare /I can’t control myself /Somebody wake me from this nightmare /I can’t escape this hell

(This animal, this animal, this animal, this animal, this animal, this animal, this animal)

So what if you can see the dark inside of me / No one will ever change this animal I have become / Help me believe it’s not the real me /Somebody help me tame this animal
this animal i have become

Making A Difference

Michael Jackson

(A discussion on Michael Jackson’s song Man in the Mirror)

Lyrics Youtube video

I’m Gonna Make A Change,
For Once In My Life

MJ’s Man in the Mirror is in the top ten charts again. I absolutely adore this song. There are needs all around us and sometimes we pretend not to see the hurts, cries and needs (or may be its easy to look the other way). We are victims of selfish kind of love that is obsessed by ‘me-my-and I’.
But… if we can make that extra effort and look, we can see people with no Home, not a nickel to loan and all alone. Perhaps, it time to make a difference in the lives of people. And we need to ask the man in the mirror to make the change. If we wanna make the world a better place, then we need to take a look at ourselves and make that change. Today. Everyday.
I have been looking (actually browsing) for information about child soldiers myself. It really broke my heart to when I read about their hapless lives. Their aches, their cries for freedom, their trauma and the horror of war. Can we/I make a change? Is there anyone who make a difference.
I was personally touched by the story behind Invisible children. See
http://therescue.invisiblechildren.com/
Back in 2003 these three young filmmakers Jason Russell, Bobby Bailey, and Laren Poole discovered the reality of child soldiers when they travelled to Africa in search of a story. After returning to the States, they created the documentary “Invisible Children: Rough Cut”, a film that exposes the tragic realities of northern Uganda’s night commuters and child soldiers.
The story of the invisible children has sparked a grassroots movement mobilizing thousands to get involved in rebuilding war-torn schools in northern Uganda and providing scholarships to African youth.
We can make the change. We need to look around. Get involved. We need to look at the Man in the Mirror and say…
I’m Gonna Make A Change,
For Once In My Life
It’s Gonna Feel Real Good,
Gonna Make A Difference
Gonna Make It Right . .
We desperately need to make the world a better place. Mahatma Gandhi said, “I want to be the change that I want to see”. Well… it needs more courage to look at the Man in the Mirror. MJ’s gone. But… these words will be long remembered, “If we wanna make the world a better place, then look at yourself and make that change”. Are we ready and willing?

I guess there’s so much we can do (if only we want to). We can make the change. We need to look around. Get involved. We need to look at the Man in the Mirror and say…

On Getting Even!

Reservation Road (2007)

Popular culture feeds on our instinct for anger and revenge. We struggle within to ‘get even’ at perceived injustice. Particularly, if there is a great sense of loss.

How do we deal with perceived ‘injustice’ and feelings of ‘getting even’. The religious message – ‘to forgive’ runs contrary to the therapeutic suggestions offerred by most psychologists. Is ‘letting go’ (expressing) one’s anger and ‘getting even’ a good thing to do?

Reservation Road (2007) is a fascinating film and it takes us through a journey of self exploration and self-evaluation of ‘what we believe in’, ‘what we say’, ‘what we do’ and ‘what we feel’ about perceived injustice and dealing with our natural instincts for anger and getting even.

  1. What is forgiveness?
  2. Why do we forgive?
  3. What does it take to forgive?
  4. Why is it difficult to forgive?
  5. Can a transcendent resolution help us?

The film gets us thinking about the making and breaking of human relationships. WATCH IT!
